अखिल मंडई गणेशोत्स्तव मंडळाचा शारदा गणपती हे पुण्याचे जागृत दैवत व भूषण आहे. १४ सप्टेंबर १८९३ या दिवशी गणेशचर्तुर्थीला लोकमान्य टिळक यांच्या शुभहस्ते या सार्वजनिक गणपतीची स्थापना झाली. १८९४ साली अखिल मंडई गणेश मंडळ स्थापन झाले. १९९३ साली शताब्धी पूर्ण केलेल्या ह्या गजानना ची विधिवत पत्रिका बनविण्यात आली आहे मंडईचा गणपती हा पुण्याचे भूषण व लाखो भक्तांचे श्रद्धास्थान आहे. हा गणपती भक्तांना पावतो अशी सर्व भक्तांची श्रद्धा आहे. पुणेकरांच्या जीवनात महान स्थान प्राप्त केलेल्या ह्या गणपतीचा इतिहास रोमांचकारी आहे.

कै. लक्ष्मणराव डोंगरे काची (पैलवान) हे तुळजापूर भवानीमातेचे निस्सीम भक्त होते. त्यांना संतान नव्हते. त्यांनी तुळजाभवानी मातेला नवस केला कि जर मला संतान प्राप्ती झाली तर मी तुझ्या कळसावरील शारदा गजानन च्या शिल्पाची प्रतिकृती करून उत्सव साजरा करीन. आजकाल मूर्ती बनवताना पर्यावरण पूरक मूर्ती बनवा असे सुचविले जाते, पण त्या काळात हि मूर्ती कागदाचा लगदा, गवत, चिखल, चिंध्या आणि सात नद्यांचे पाणी ई. पासून घडवली गेली, परंतु प्रत्यक्षात हि मूर्ती बरीच मोठी असल्यामुळे त्यांनी हि मूर्ती (छत्रपती शिवाजी संघ) म्हणजेच आताचे अखिल मंडई मंडळ यास अर्पण केली, तदनंतर हा उत्सव मोठ्या प्रमाणात साजरा होऊ लागला. १८९४ साली दुसरी मूर्ती केली. परंतु ती मूर्ती भंग पावली.

मंडळाने १९५४ साली दुसरी मूर्ती बसविली. परंतु ज्या ज्या वेळी नवी मूर्ती बसविली त्या त्या वेळी उत्सवात विघ्न आले. जुनी मूर्ती न बसवता नवीन मूर्ती बसविण्याचा प्रयत्न केला असता दोन वेळा मंडपास आग लागली व संपूर्ण मंडप भस्मसात झाला. परंतु गणेश मूर्तीला काही धक्का पोचला नाही. तसेच दुसऱ्या जागी मूर्ती बसविण्याचा अशाच तऱ्हेने प्रयत्न केला असता विघ्न येऊन विफल झाला. म्हणून मूळचीच मूर्ती उत्सवात बसवतात यावरून जागा बदलणे व मूर्तीची परंपरा न बदलण्याचा गणपतीचा आदेश आहे हे भक्तांच्या लक्षात आले. त्यामुळे आता कोणताही बदल करण्यात येत नाही व पूर्वपरंपरा कटाक्षाने पाळण्यात येते.

१९६५ साली या गणपतीची विटंबना करण्याचा प्रयत्न झाला होता . पण तो सिद्धीस गेला नाही .संपूर्ण वातावरण तंग झाले होते. पुणेकरांच्या भावना या गणपतीशी निगडित आहेत व लाखो भक्तांचे हे अढळ श्रद्धास्थान आहे. गणेशोत्सवात सर्व महाराष्ट्रातुन शारदा गणेश गणपतीचे दर्शन घेण्यासाठी असंख्य भाविक, सिने अभिनेते , सर्व समाजातील, राजकीय क्षेत्रातील व इतर क्षेत्रातील मान्यवर मंडळी शारदा गजानन च्या दर्शनासाठी व आशीर्वादा साठी आवर्जून येतात व श्रद्धापूर्वक आपली गाऱ्हाणी मांडतात व या सर्वांची मनोकामना श्रींचे प्रसादाने पूर्ण व्हावी म्हणून नवस करतात.त्यांना या गणपती च्या कृपेचा प्रत्यय येतो .

मंडई गणपती यांची विसर्जन मिरवणूक हा एक अविस्मरणीय आनंदाचा क्षण असतो व हजारो भक्तगण हा सोहळा पाहून धन्य होतात . पुण्याच्या गणेशोत्सव विसर्जन मिरवणुकीचा हा परमोच्च आनंद सोहळा आपल्या डोळ्याने पाहण्यास मिळणे याला भाग्य लागते. त्यानंतर भक्ताला हुरहूर लागते व साश्रू नयनाने गणेश वंदन करून पुढील वर्षाची वाट पाहत भक्त घरोघरी परततात . परंतु मंडई गणपती विसर्जनाबरोबर या उत्सवाची सांगता होते . या शारदा गजानन ची ओळख हि झोपाळ्यावरच्या गणपती म्हणूनच प्रसिद्ध आहे आणि या वर्षी म्हणजेच २२ ऑगस्ट २०२० होणाऱ्या उत्सवात शारदा गजानन होणार आहेत तरी आवर्जून आपण दर्शनाचा व प्रसादाचा लाभ घ्यावा.

Akhil Mandai Mandal and its Sharada-Ganesh idol is one of the main attractions of Pune’s Ganesh festival. Celebrating its 127th year, the mandal is witness to freedom struggle and progressive reforms associated with the city. Mandai, the vegetable market in the old city that has a rich history spanning over 125 years of history, was dominated by a few families, who initiated public celebrations of Ganesh festival and formed the Akhil Mandai Mandal.

The mandal’s Sharada-Ganesh idol that was installed 127 years ago is made of paper pulp and cloth pieces. An attempt was made to go for a new idol in 1894 and it was decided that the old idol should be immersed. However, heavy rains during the immersion procession foiled this decision as despite an umbrella cover the new idol was damaged and the clay of new idol dissolved in the downpour. This forced the mandal to immerse the new idol.

Interestingly, the old idol, without any protection from the rains, was intact in the heavy rains. The hamals (porters) in mandai made another idol in plaster of Paris, a replica of the original Sharada- Ganesh idol. This new PoP idol was installed for the 10-day festival during the 1954 celebrations, but the pandal caught fire on the first day, forcing the mandal to install the original idol and carry on the tradition.

Famous leaders of the Indian freedom struggle, including Lokmanya Tilak, used to visit Mandai Ganpati. The mandal witnessed memorable felicitation of freedom fighters released from jails in 1946, including Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Khan Abdul Gafarkhan and Sarojini Naidu.
